Masterclass: The theory of change and response - Guidelines for research on population and development in Africa with Yves Charbit, Professor Emeritus of Demography, Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9, Paris, France The theme of population and development covers a wide range of problems and issues in which demographic facts are integrated into economic, social, cultural and political domains. Research must extend across all disciplines and levels of analysis, addressing themes such as poverty, power, social organization, resources and the environment, which are at the heart of explanations for the success or failure of development. I propose a new theoretical framework for analyzing these issues, one that is better able to deal with the problems of causality that arise in any investigation of population and development. But what exactly are causal relationships supposed to include? What \u201cchanges\u201d and \u201cresponses\u201d need to be taken into account? I'll examine the relationships between the two, showing, in the case of sub-Saharan Africa, how field research provides a better understanding of the structural inertia at the heart of underdevelopment. I will share concrete examples drawn from my field experience in Africa that illustrate these theoretical viewpoints<\/p>\n
