And by using our knowledge of bacteria, we'll be able to predict new antiviral genes. And that would be extraordinary!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This work is carried out by the interdisciplinary research team she - created and - has been leading since 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mdmlab.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Molecular Diversity of Microbes Lab<\/a> (MDM Lab). In this team, researchers work as a collective, and interdisciplinarity plays a central role. The result is an \u201cintellectual ferment\u201d that sometimes goes off the beaten track, and - at least to some extent - keeps an open eye on current research. Together, the MDM Lab team seeks to answer major questions in the field of bacterial immune system diversity:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Describe, document and understand how such a diversity of systems emerges (in the last 6 months, the number of known systems has doubled!).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding the role of these systems in nature<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A work that Aude Bernheim herself explained perfectly in her lecture at the Coll\u00e8ge de France on December 13:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Bacterial immunity: discovering a new world - Aude Bernheim (2022)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CsawXOeApr0?list=PL1NaqiieWs8nSgG3fYWnEzTA4KkXvKdFu\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe> \n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lecture at the Coll\u00e8ge de France - December 13, 2022 - Bacterial immunity: discovering a new world, Aude Bernheim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A talk that reflects his commitment to and work in the sciences: accessible to all, passionate and already looking ahead to the work to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interdisciplinarity and inclusiveness at the heart of his research practice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As a Master's student in AIRE - Life Science AIV at the Learning Planet Institute (CRI - Centre de Recherches Interdisciplinaires - at the time), Aude Bernheim approached research and laboratory methods from an original angle: interdisciplinarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-style:normal;font-weight:800\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite><strong><em>This meant learning about different disciplines and methods, but also collaborating in a wide-ranging way (...) we were confronted with the human sciences, design and art, which inevitably led us to develop projects at the interface between science and society.<\/em><\/strong>.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, she became aware of \u201c<em>scientific production as a non-objective social construct<\/em>\u201dShe is committed to shedding light on the tendency to exclude some people from science in favor of others. Since then, she has been questioning, raising awareness and striving to practice inclusive, stereotype-free science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2013, she and Flora Vincent (another former CRI student) - now head of a research team (the European Molecular Biology Laboratory), after completing her post-doctorate in marine microbiology at the Weizmann Institute of Sciences - set up the association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wax-science.fr\/wax-quest-ce-que-cest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WAX Science<\/a> (<em>What About Xperiencing Science<\/em>), which aims to promote science and the scientific spirit among young people, gender equality and gender diversity in science to make it more accessible, and to raise awareness of stereotypes in the scientific professions. A little later, in 2019, and still with Flora Vincent, she co-wrote \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.belin-editeur.com\/lintelligence-artificielle-pas-sans-elles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Artificial intelligence, not without them!<\/em><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"font-size:16px;font-style:normal;font-weight:800\">\n<p><\/p>\n<cite><strong><em>How can we make science more participatory and inclusive? I've been thinking about this for 10 years. There's no miracle solution. But it does mean opening the laboratory doors. It means asking citizens to do things they can help us with. It also means changing the scientific world and its organizations to allow everyone to be there, and not just a reproduction of the same people over and over again.<\/em><\/strong><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Going further with citizen science<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aude Bernheim's commitment - and that of her team - to opening up the world of science was recently illustrated by one of the MDM Lab's projects, carried out with Vincent Libis - the project's scientific manager and a researcher in research unit 1284 - and Helena Shomar - co-responsible for participatory science on the project with Aude Bernheim and a researcher in research unit 1284 : <a href=\"https:\/\/la-science-a-la-pelle.webflow.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science in spades<\/a> (read our article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/en\/newspage?id=62a70796bad4b4003da7a50e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>). In addition to blending bioinformatics and experimental research methods, the research team called on participatory and citizen sciences to seek out a greater diversity of bacterial molecules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:11px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/capture-decran-2023-02-01-a-115859-1024x454-1.jpg\" alt=\"Science \u00e0 la pelle - website\" class=\"wp-image-17161\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer of 2022, every citizen was invited to take part in the project and to collect and send soil samples throughout France (in mainland France - France's overseas territories - France's overseas territories - France's overseas territories). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science-a-la-pelle.fr\/results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">view map<\/a>) to identify new molecules from soil bacteria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The samples received are currently being processed in the laboratory to isolate the various bacteria and perhaps discover new chemical defense systems! Ultimately, the aim is to discover new drugs...
