Self, UNESCO <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SDG<\/a> 4 Youth and Students Network, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learning-planet.org\/2023-2024-youth-design-challenge-finalists-training-programme-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finalists<\/a> Learning Planet Youth Design Challenge, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/edwardstevenette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Stevenette<\/a> - team member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learning-planet.org\/\">LearningPlanet Alliance<\/a> at the Learning Planet Institute - and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fran%C3%A7ois-taddei-3696b919\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fran\u00e7ois Taddei <\/a>- founder and president of\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learning Planet Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/en\/the-unesco-chair-learning-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unesco Chair in Learning Sciences<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants began by sharing their thoughts on what co-designing learning with young people means to them, resulting in a word cloud that highlighted key themes such as \u2019learning together\", \"learning together\" and \"learning together\".\u2019<strong><em>empowerment<\/em><\/strong>, l\u2019<strong><em>innovation<\/em><\/strong> and the<strong><em>inclusion<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/capture-decran-2024-07-29-a-114932-1024x505-1.jpg\" alt=\"Co-Designing the Future of Learning with Youth: Lookback on the UNESCO Learning Sciences Chair Event\" class=\"wp-image-37936\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The session then focused on three main themes through a series of case studies: the <strong><em>governance<\/em><\/strong>, the <strong><em>curriculum design<\/em><\/strong> and the <strong><em>advocacy<\/em><\/strong>:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Governance: Empowering student leaders<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Manja Klemen\u010di\u010d<\/strong>, associate lecturer in sociology and general education at Harvard University and editor of the Bloomsbury Handbook of Student Politics and Representation in Higher Education, stressed the importance of empowering student leaders:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Co-designing with students means empowering student leaders. It means breaking down the barriers between academics, researchers and practitioners of student representation and governance. It affirmed that student leaders possess valuable knowledge and experience that can inform and educate us, creating a powerful learning community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/capture-decran-2024-07-29-a-124517-1024x333-1.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-37951\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsburycollections.com\/encyclopedia?docid=b-9781350376007&amp;ref=globalstudentforum.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the free Bloomsbury manual<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Program: Minimalism and commitment<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Michael Winter<\/strong>, co-president of Oikos International, spoke passionately about the need for a minimalist approach to curriculum design:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Co-designing the future of learning requires more than working on details. We need to open up spaces, become curriculum minimalists and find room for the arts and projects. Educators need to get out of their desks, see students and actively engage with them.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/design\/DAGLrO22zLI\/JykX_v3vTCS68AwzzXik5w\/view?utm_content=DAGLrO22zLI&amp;utm_campaign=designshare&amp;utm_medium=link&amp;utm_source=editor\">See Michael Winter's presentation here<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Taddei<\/strong>, founder and president of the Learning Planet Institute, shared a long-term perspective on co-design:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>We started 20 years ago with a few students and have doubled in size several times over the last 20 years. Co-designing physical spaces, learning environments, curricula and degrees with the student perspective in mind has been essential. Our approach is to listen to the setting and evolve it with student input to maximize student and project fulfillment.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advocacy: Harnessing the power of storytelling<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/capture-decran-2024-07-29-a-125026-1024x603-1.jpg\" alt=\"To co-design the Future of Learning with Youth: Lookback on the UNESCO Learning Sciences Chair Event\" class=\"wp-image-37952\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arissa Roy<\/strong>, co-chair of Healthy and Safe Spaces, Schools &amp; Self, UNESCO SDG 4 Youth and Students Network, stressed that storytelling was a crucial tool in co-design:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Having participated in the creation of the UN Youth Declaration as a young person, I believe that storytelling is essential. According to Stanford University, stories are remembered up to 22 times more than facts alone. Continue case studies<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">We need to continue exploring case studies to effectively codify learning with young people, and we need to hear directly from students. We invite educational institutions, policy-makers and international organizations to join us on this journey. By truly engaging with young people, listening to them and designing with them, we can transform the educational landscape to make it more inclusive and responsive to local and global challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Take part in Educational Planet's youth design challenge<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, we will be launching the second edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.learning-planet.org\/action-group\/youth-empowerment\/learning-planet-youth-design-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learning Planet Youth Design Challenge<\/a>, on the occasion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/summit-of-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations General Assembly Summit for the Future<\/a> in New York. This annual global challenge encourages students aged 15 to 26 to propose learning programs for thriving, engaged and sustainable universities of the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/daniel-persky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Daniel<\/strong> <strong>Persky<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>14 years old, United States<\/strong>, a finalist in the Youth Design Challenge, shared his views:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>It's very important to give young people the knowledge and tools they need to contribute to our future. That's part of what I'm trying to do with my own project as part of the University Design Challenge.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/pearl-oriele-perumal-60a16a1b5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pearl Perumal<\/a>, 26, South Africa<\/strong>, winner of the first youth design competition, added: \u201cThe youth design competition is transformative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The Youth Design Challenge is transformative.
