On March 22, the final<\/a> intra-university My Thesis in 180 seconds<\/a> ! 14 candidates will compete in front of a panel of judges and the public for the \u201cPrix du Public\u201d. On this occasion, Juliette Millet<\/a>, doctoral student at\u2019FIRE doctoral school<\/a> \u201cFrontiers of Innovation in Research and Education<\/em>\u201dwill present his thesis entitled\u201cModels for foreign language perception<\/em>\u201c. <\/p>\n

Ma Th\u00e8se en 180 secondes (My Thesis in 180 seconds) enables doctoral students to present their research topic to a lay audience: a delicate exercise in scientific mediation! Each doctoral student is given three minutes to give a brief, clear and often entertaining presentation of his or her thesis. After Camille Gaulon<\/a> last year, another representative of the Learning Planet Institute<\/a> will rise to the challenge: Juliette Millet!
Competing with 14 other candidates, she will present her work at this final to earn her place in the national semi-final, under the colors of the\u2019Sorbonne-Paris-Cit\u00e9 Alliance<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

UNDERSTANDING SPEECH
<\/h2>\n

\u201cLearning a new language is a daunting task. Before you even consider confronting a new grammar or vocabulary, differentiating the sounds that make up this new language is already an ordeal in itself.<\/em>\u201d
Juliette Millet's thesis deals with the biases in sound perception that complicate language learning: we are sometimes unable to distinguish non-native sounds: \u201cNative Japanese, for example, when learning English, have difficulty differentiating between the \/r\/ sound (in \u2018right\u2019) and the \/l\/ sound (in \u2018light\u2019).<\/em>.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSuccessfully predicting these biases, and understanding their origin, tells us about the rules that govern our speech comprehension process.<\/em>\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n
