{"id":956,"date":"2022-06-09T12:57:00","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T10:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lpinstitute.dev.onpressidium.com\/news\/oceanographic-citizen-sciences\/"},"modified":"2025-11-05T10:34:26","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T09:34:26","slug":"oceanographic-citizen-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.learningplanetinstitute.org\/en\/news\/oceanographic-citizen-sciences\/","title":{"rendered":"[COMMUNAUT\u00c9] Le doctorat de C\u00e9dric Courson : les sciences citoyennes oc\u00e9anographiques sous les feux de la rampe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>C\u00e9dric Courson is a 2nd-year FIRE PhD student at LOCEAN (Laboratoire Oc\u00e9anographique et Climatique de Paris), but you're likely to meet him in Brest, where he also works closely with IFREMER (Institut Fran\u00e7ais de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer) and the Universit\u00e9 de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO). <\/p>\n<p>\tC\u00e9dric's interdisciplinary PhD explores how open source technologies and citizen science can contribute to oceanographic research, straddling the boundary between the physical and social sciences. His motivation is to study how these citizen science programs work, and whether they can make physical measurements comparable to those made by scientists, with sufficient accuracy to then conduct physical modeling of the ocean. For example, temperature measurements need to be accurate to 1\/1000\u00b0C to serve as modeling parameters.<\/p>\n<p>\tThis project is a continuation of what it initiated in 2014 by co-funding the association <a href=\"https:\/\/www.astrolabe-expeditions.org\/\">Astrolabe Expeditions<\/a>, oceanography and citizen science. Today, part of his research work, the SensOcean project, is being showcased as part of the\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/exposition-invivo.univ-brest.fr\/sensocean\/\">a virtual exhibition<\/a> organized by UBO to mark its 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\tThe thesis project is structured around three different themes, each linked to a field mission... on water.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t- <strong>OpenLagoon<\/strong> is a local project designed to study the evolution of chlorophyll in Polynesian lagoons, using instrumentation deployed directly by the inhabitants.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t- <strong>The LittObs project<\/strong> takes place in Brittany, where instruments are deployed in bays to monitor the mixing of continental and oceanic waters.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t- Finally, <strong>the SensOcean project<\/strong> aims to equip sailing yachts with free scientific instruments to measure the physical characteristics of the oceans, such as temperature and salinity. As yachts sail the world's oceans, this will enable the acquisition of measurements to be multiplied, leading to a better understanding of ocean currents. The oceans are one of the main drivers of climate change, and a better understanding of them will help us to better understand climate evolution.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A dozen yachts are currently sailing with SensOcean measurement kits. The first of these went to sea in the summer of 2021 during an expedition to Iceland, in which C\u00e9dric took part to identify what was working properly and what needed to be improved on the measurement instruments. <\/p>\n<p>A radio journalist accompanied this 2-month expedition and reported on it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/fr\/podcasts\/c-est-pas-du-vent\/20211021-climat-la-structure-de-l-oc\u00e9an-est-en-train-de-changer\">immersive radio report<\/a> (Samuel Turpin). A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samuelturpin.photography\/_files\/ugd\/24f5c0_2f6317f5ae4048cbb0524bdc07404fdb.pdf\">written coverage<\/a> is also available on the UK's national sailing magazine, Sailing Today. Following this media coverage, C\u00e9dric was also invited to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rts.ch\/la-1ere\/programmes\/cqfd\/12886115-le-gulf-stream-ralentit-08-03-2022.html?mediaShare=1\">on CQFD<\/a>, Swiss Radio's science program, in early March 2022, to answer questions about the expedition and its research.<\/p>\n<p>The Planet Learning Institute is delighted to shed a little more light on this exciting and impactful project!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"next-waves\">Next waves<\/h3>\n<p>For the LittObs project in coastal Brittany, an outing is planned this summer with the association des Plaisanciers de Marina de Brest.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apbrest.com\/\">(APMB<\/a> ) to place scientific instruments in the bay, which will then be removed this autumn once sufficient data has been acquired.<\/p>\n<p>Other yachts will also be setting sail with SensOcean kits in September.<\/p>\n<p>As an alumnus of the AIRE Master's Digital Sciences program, C\u00e9dric has close ties with the Institute's ecosystem. Some of the instruments that will equip these boats have been built in the Learning Planet Institute's Makerlab.
