Drawing on an ancient legend, this work transforms our sense of powerlessness into a force for repair: the “needle of attention” that we all carry within us can become the essential tool for mending our bonds and weaving a future where wisdom finally catches up with power.

As we stand at what many describe as a “planetary threshold”, the fabric of our world is trembling. From the escalating ecological emergency to the conflicts in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. We find ourselves living in a “nightmare” made of dreams that have moved too fast, scientific, technological and political ambitions that have accelerated while losing touch with the essential rhythms of care and attention.

In his new work, 1001 Needles: Weaving Futures Together, François Taddei, founder and president of the Learning Planet Institute, offers a profound shift in perspective for those bending under the weight of the modern world. This is particularly true for the younger generation, to whom anxiety and grief are often presented as weaknesses, whereas he claims them as “signals that something precious is under strain”. Those often described as “too sensitive” are, in reality, the first to feel the tears in the fabric of our shared reality. They are the ones who know, before anyone else, when it begins to fray.

The legend of the needle

The heart of this book beats around an ancient African oral legend: every human being is born with a needle. Not a metal tool intended to wound, but a needle made of attention, placed near a child’s heart before the arrival of language. Its sole purpose is to weave and re-weave the “fabric of the world” – that living tapestry of relationships, memories and dreams – whenever it begins to tear.

1001 Needles: Weaving Futures Together explores three essential uses of this needle, vital for our era of crisis:

Weaving connections: The simple yet revolutionary act of stitching relationships back together and repairing the small misunderstandings that threaten to divide us.

Reweaving after loss: The needle does not erase a tear or a wound, but it prevents it from spreading. It allows a new pattern – a transformation – to emerge from the pain.

Helping others learn to weave: The needle never works alone. It requires the collective courage to remain present and attentive when everything in our digital age invites us to look away.

From Nagasaki to AI: power versus wisdom

The inspiration for this work is deeply personal. During a visit to Nagasaki in August 2025, for the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing, François Taddei realised that Humanity had learned to unlock immense power long before learning how to live wisely with it. From the dreams of Marie Curie and Albert Einstein to the emerging frontier of AI, we see the recurring danger of intelligence outrunning wisdom.

The word “intelligence” comes from inter-legere (to read between, to perceive relations). 1001 Needles argues that the next stage of our civilisation must be the practice of “ethical dreamweaving”: reconnecting our immense power with the wisdom of the heart.

The needle game: a practice for the future

How do we ensure that our dreams – whether they are technological breakthroughs or personal goals – do not become nightmares for others? The book introduces “The Needle Game”, a series of ethical questions designed to be asked in classrooms, research teams and communities alike:

Whose dream does this serve?

Which dream might become a nightmare tomorrow?

Who is not here to speak?

How might we reweave the dream so that more desirable futures remain possible?

Keeping the needle moving

We are not asked to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders, only to keep the needle moving where we stand. By sharing our “stitches” – those moments when we choose to repair a dialogue, for instance, or to slow down to prevent harm – we contribute to the “1001 Planetary Nights”, delaying destruction and opening the way to a new dawn.

1001 Needles: Weaving Futures Together is an open attempt to think responsibly at a time when the world seems more fragile than ever.
