Filtering fact from fiction: Evaluating sources in the age of societal transitions

Given the vast amount of information currently available on the internet, and the spread of “fake news” and other types of misinformation, evaluating sources has become a key skill for all users. But what is 'source evaluation” and why/when should users carry it out? Based on the results of empirical studies on users” information-seeking behavior, Mônica Macedo-Rouet will demonstrate that information-seeking can depend on the context in which it takes place. With this in mind, she will propose some ideas for the development of pedagogical interventions aimed at teaching sourcing to teenagers. ------Find out more about the speaker Mônica Macedo-Rouet is Professor of Educational Psychology at CY Cergy University in Paris. Her research focuses on the role of digital reading and education in the development of literacy in young people and adults. She is currently Associate Editor of the Journal for the Study of Education and Development. Previously, she was editor-in-chief of ComCiência, an online science communication magazine at the State University of Campinas (Brazil), and a researcher at the Centre national de documentation pédagogique (Canopé - French Ministry of Education, France) and the University of Paris 8.
