Beyond the Paralympics with the team of refugee athletes

We are delighted to announce the launch, in partnership with the United Nations University (UNU), of the first Phoenix Award. Named after the mythical creature that rises from the ashes, it celebrates the achievements of resilience.

On September 4, 2024, the Institute, in partnership with the UNU and its partners, will reward the eight refugee athletes taking part in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games - Salman Abbariki, Guillaume Junior Atangana, Hadi Darvish, Amelio Castro Grueso, Hadi Hassanzada, Sayed Amir Hossein Hosseini, Ibrahim Al Hussein and Zakia Khudadadi - for their perseverance and extraordinary performances. It also symbolizes the promise to support their educational needs after the Games.

The Learning Planet Institute believes that lifelong learning is a human right, which is why it will provide each of the Phoenix Award winners with free online and face-to-face educational resources, carefully tailored to their needs and desires, to support them in their future, beyond the Paralympic Games.

Beyond Paralympics, with the athletes of the Refugees Team

 

We are pleased to announce the launch, along with the United Nations University (UNU), announce the first Phoenix Award, named after the mythical creature that rises from the ashes to recognize resilience and achievement.

On 4 September, the Institute, in partnership with UNU and its wider community, will honour the eight refugee athletes competing at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris with The Phoenix Award - Salman Abbariki, Guillaume Junior Atangana, Hadi Darvish, Amelio Castro Grueso, Hadi Hassanzada, Sayed Amir Hossein Hosseini, Ibrahim Al Hussein, and Zakia Khudadadi - in recognition of their extraordinary human perseverance and performance and carry with it a promise to accompany the athletes in their educational endeavours after the Games.

 

Believing in lifelong learning as a human right, the Learning Planet Institute is offering both online and in-person educational resources that will be free of charge and tailored carefully to each individual Phoenix Awardee depending on the athlete's specific needs and desires to support them for their future beyond the Paralympic Games in Paris.
