Masterclass: Artificial Intelligence: From science to ethics and regulation with Raja Chatila, Professor Emeritus of Robotics, AI and Ethics at ISIR-CNRS and Sorbonne University, Paris, France Today's AI systems are based on machine learning techniques that process data to build statistical models used to make decisions, predict outcomes or generate content. During the masterclass, we will review the scientific and technical foundations of AI systems, illustrate how they work, outline their limitations, and explain why they raise ethical issues related to safety, human autonomy, comprehensibility or fairness. We will also discuss the main ethical principles and requirements that should be taken into account for the design and operation of AI systems, such as safety and security, transparency, human oversight or social and environmental well-being. Finally, we will present the governance frameworks in place, with a focus on the European AI law

This masterclass program is organized by the EURIP Graduate School (École Universitaire de Recherche Interdisciplinaire de Paris). Located at the Learning Planet Institute, in collaboration with Université Paris Cité, it brings together the AIRE Master's program (Approaches to Interdisciplinary Research and Education) and the FIRE doctoral school (Frontières de l'Innovation en Recherche et Éducation). EURIP welcomes post-graduate students and early-career researchers who wish to tackle global challenges related to sustainability and planetary health through innovative interdisciplinary approaches.
