Challenge-based learning is an approach used to integrate working life into teaching and learning. Challenges from business, the public sector and society are deeply integrated into teaching and learning through collaboration with real-life partners. Challenge-based learning is a call to action for students and partners to collaborate on topical issues.
Project-, problem- and design-based learning has become increasingly popular in higher education. At Aalto University, challenge-based learning draws on the above approaches, combining their features in a learning model that integrates real-life challenges provided by teaching partners in a multidisciplinary way. A comprehensive definition of challenge-based learning might be as follows: “Learning is organized collaboratively around real-life challenges and is carried out through student-led projects provided by external partners
Challenge-based learning offers many potential benefits, such as introducing new teaching and learning practices that align with work and life environments, and enhancing students' employability. Authentic learning experiences enable students to explore, discuss and meaningfully construct concepts and relationships in contexts that involve real-life challenges and projects that are relevant to the learner.
