Significant financial resources are devoted to solving humanity's most pressing problems. 22 of the world's largest philanthropic foundations provided more than 6.1 billion USD for development work in 2017; in the same year, total development aid from public and private actors in the 30 member states of the OECDD's Development Assistance Committee (DAC) amounted to 434 billion USD. However, solving these problems requires long-term support that goes beyond activity-based funding and approaches that tackle root causes - i.e. approaches that aim to change systems. To optimize the use of available funds, it is necessary to introduce the systems change approach to organizations involved in the sector, and to share best practices.
This report is therefore the result of a collaboration between funders, intermediaries and systemic change leaders that aims to signal to the social sector funding community - including philanthropists, foundations, impact investors, corporate donors, government agencies and multilateral organizations - that current practices must evolve to better support systemic change leaders.
