Crowd4SDG launches its second call on climate and gender inequalities

  • International
  • R&D

VisitCRI, l’University of Paris and their partners in the Crowd4SDG European research project have launched their second call for projects on climate change and gender issues. Submit your ideas by answering the challenge until September 30, 2021!

We are witnessing an unprecedented convergence of crises. The effects of climate change are reflected in extreme weather phenomena such as floods and droughts. These often affect local communities in ways that exacerbate inequalities between men and women.

Crowd4SDG is working to mitigate this phenomenon. This three-year Horizon 2020 research and innovation action encourages citizen science projects addressing climate change-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through its second call for projects “#Open17ClimateGender challenge” focusing on SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), participants are invited to present their ideas on how to develop a project that addresses these SDGs using crowdsourcing (information gathered or actions taken by a large group of ordinary citizens), such as:

  • Measuring the differential impact of disasters on women and men.
  • Assessing women's vulnerability to the effects of climate change on natural resources.
  • Improve data on women's participation in environmental management.
  • Measuring ecosystem health in a systemic way with the contribution of women.
  • Open crowdsourcing challenge for climate resilience and gender equality

Why take part?

Once the call for projects has closed, the #Open17ClimateGender challenge will offer a five-week interactive online coaching program tailored to global innovators to the 50 selected applicants, to help them connect and transform good ideas into viable social innovation projects and prototypes.

Five teams will then be selected to take part in a challenge-based online innovation workshop, led by the project member, CERN IdeaSquare. During this workshop, teams will learn how to build a working prototype for their project and connect with communities and social innovation experts who can help them launch and sustain the project.

The two best teams selected by a jury will be invited to present their projects to potential UN partner organizations and NGOs, as well as impact investors, at the’Geneva Trialogue event.

Conditions of eligibility

The challenge is open to any individual or team of up to four people, anywhere in the world. Applicants must be aged 16 or over. Applications must be written in English, and participants must have a good command of written and spoken English.

What is Crowd4SDG?

This Open17 challenge is supported by Crowd4SDG, a three-year Horizon 2020 research and innovation action supported by the European Commission's Science with and for Society (SwafS) program.

Led by a consortium of 6 partners(UNIGE, CERN, IIIA-CSIC, Politecnico di Milano, UNITAR, University of Paris/CRI), Crowd4SDG promotes citizen science to address the SDGs, with a focus on climate action, through an innovation cycle called GEAR (Gather, Evaluate, Accelerate, Refine).
