As we enter the sixth week of confinement, never in the history of the French school system have we experienced such interdependence between the school system and families, and the need for cooperation between teachers and parents to provide a framework for learning and support for children and teenagers. The announcement of a gradual return to schools as of May 11 suggests that this interdependence is set to last, and even to become part of educational mores in general. It is therefore now necessary to establish ways of putting children to work that do not impose suffering or failure on them, particularly in a context where the use of digital media seems to be becoming the norm.

In an article for parents and teachers entitled “Teaching and learning in times of confinement”Natasha Duroisin, a researcher in the psychology of learning at the University of Mons (Belgium), offers advice to parents and teachers, based on a synthesis of scientific literature. The aim is to “combat certain (bad) habits that may have been adopted from the very first weeks of confinement” and to fight the unfounded belief in the omnipotence of digital tools because “technologies don't change our attentional and memory capacities.”

Finally, for this 5th edition of Flash Info, we have selected activities on chromosomes and sound waves, as well as a scientific watch from the child psychiatry department at Debré Hospital to help families manage their relationships with their children during the period of confinement. Teacher ambassadors and scientist mentors also devised challenges based on notions of time, ecology and friction forces.
