UNESCO has been promoting education for global citizenship since the UN Secretary-General launched the Global Education First Initiative (GEFI) in 2012, making the promotion of global citizenship one of its three educational priorities.
This book, entitled Education for Global Citizenship: Themes and Learning Objectives, is UNESCO's first pedagogical guide to education for global citizenship. It is the result of an extensive process of research and consultation with specialists from different regions of the world. The guide draws on the UNESCO publication Global Citizenship Education: Preparing Learners for the Challenges of the 21st Century, as well as the outcomes of three key UNESCO events on global citizenship education: the Technical Consultation on Global Citizenship Education (September 2013) and the First and Second UNESCO Forums on Global Citizenship Education, held in December 2013 and January 2015.
Before it was finalized, the guide was field-tested by education stakeholders in different countries in each region, to ensure that it was adapted to diverse geographical and socio-cultural contexts.
