Nature Sustainability - Harnessing the collaborative power of AI and citizen science for sustainable development

Muki Haklay, researcher at’Learning Transitions research unit at’ Learning Planet Institute (joint unit with’university CY Cergy Paris), and his co-authors recently published an article on the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) and citizen science in tackling the challenges of sustainable development.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and citizen science both hold immense potential for tackling the major challenges of sustainable development, from health to climate change. In addition to their individual benefits, when combined they offer considerable synergies that can contribute to both better monitoring and the achievement of sustainable development. While AI has already been integrated into citizen science projects, notably through automated classification and identification, the integration of citizen science approaches into AI is lacking. Such integration could, however, address some of the key challenges associated with AI, such as social bias, which could accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable development.
