The Learning Planet Institute and its partners* in the PATTERN consortium - Piloting open and responsible Activities and Trainings Towards the Enhancement of Researchers Networks - are proud to announce the official launch of this European initiative, funded by by the European Union as part of the Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
PATTERN is a 42-month project whose overall aim is to promote the practice of open and responsible research and innovation (Open RRI) by developing and piloting training activities for researchers at all stages of their careers.
This project therefore comprises 3 main aspects:
(1) Open Science (OS), an approach to the scientific process based on open cooperative work, tools and the dissemination of knowledge; ;
(2) RRI, which seeks to involve the public in the research process in order to better align the objectives and expected results of research with the needs of society; ;
(3) the development and piloting of training activities, aimed at strengthening the transferable skills of researchers and adopting a process of transformation to improve the relevance of the research carried out, as well as developing their ability to meet societal challenges and, consequently, improve the capacity of the’European Research Area (EER) in its interaction between science and society.
FOCUS ON TRANSFERABLE SKILLS IN 4 PHASES
The structure of the project aims to take into account the specificities of each organization, excluding the possibility of imposing open RRI practices, starting with the pilot organizations involved in the project itself.
Eight main transferable skills, each covered by the PATTERN consortium partners, have been identified in the context of open RRI:
- Open access
- FAIR data management
- Citizen science
- Research integrity
- Gender, non-discrimination and inclusion in research
- Disseminating and exploiting results
- Scientific communication
- Management and leadership
A PLAN WITH SPECIFIC, INTERDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
The PATTERN work plan is made up of specific, interdependent activities, each of which is implemented within the framework of a coherent methodology:
- State of the art: consolidating knowledgeA comprehensive state-of-the-art mapping and analysis of learning opportunities for researchers in open RRI.
- Development of PATTERN activities and training platformOn the basis of the eight transferable skills mentioned above, training modules are being developed and made available on a platform to be developed for the project.
- Testing PATTERN training modulesco-design and fine-tuning of PATTERN training courses with PATTERN pilot organizations, to meet end-users' needs perfectly.
- Evidence for policy developmentIn the light of the experience and knowledge acquired, PATTERN will draw up a set of policy recommendations for the institutions responsible for training researchers.
- Co-creation and co-design interdisciplinary learning paths and teaching materials.

An opportunity to explore some of the fundamental ideas and tools developed at the Learning Planet Institute - Muki Haklay
THE LEARNING PLANET INSTITUTE'S EXPERTISE IN CO-CREATING TRAINING MATERIALS
Muki Haklay and Andrea Giraldo Sevilla from the R&D team, and Eric Cherel from the Institute's digital ecosystem team. will work together on this co-creation and co-design phase. On the basis of the mapping and analysis activity to be carried out by Aarhus Universitet, The Digital Ecosystem team will produce a new competency framework for researchers on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), develop interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary learning pathways, and coordinate the development of training materials. The Digital Ecosystem team will provide a platform for training and discovery.(Projects) that will enable learners to easily access and use these materials over the long term. It will also provide a cross-platform AI recommendation system.(WeLearn) which will be connected to the platform OpenAIRE OpenPlato to create a unified digital ecosystem for PATTERN.
More specifically, their aim will be to: i) develop a competency framework for responsible research and innovation and the new semi-formal PATTERN curriculum; ii) design and co-create training materials; iii) develop learning objectives and pathways; iv) design and implement the PATTERN training platform; v) formulate a sustainability plan for PATTERN training outcomes.
Muki Haklay, who is involved in the coordination and training of citizen science as part of PATTERN, notes that “.“PATTERN offers an opportunity to explore some of the fundamental ideas and tools that have been developed at the Learning Planet Institute with researchers from across Europe, and to use them to further develop open science and responsible research and innovation practices.“.
A CONSORTIUM OF 14 PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS
PATTERN is a 3.5-year project led by the’Agenzia per la Promozione della Ricerca Europea and made up of 14 partners* and 5 affiliates from 13 countries with in-depth knowledge and experience of open and responsible research and innovation practices in their daily lives, ensuring the widest possible adoption and adaptation of PATTERN training courses to the real needs of research funding and research performing organizations.
