Rethinking education: Towards a global commons?

  • Education
  • International

The changes taking place in today's world are reaching unprecedented levels of complexity and contradiction. The role of education is to prepare individuals and communities for the tensions generated by these changes, by enabling them to adapt and respond to them. This publication contributes to a renewed reflection on education and learning in this context. It helps UNESCO fulfill its role as a global observatory of social transformations, one of its principal missions, and aims to stimulate debate on public policies.

This call for dialogue is addressed to all stakeholders. It is inspired by a humanist vision of education and development based on the principles of respect for life and human dignity, equal rights, social justice, cultural diversity, international solidarity and shared responsibility for building a sustainable future. These are the fundamental dimensions of our common humanity. This book extends the vision set out in UNESCO's two flagship publications: Learning to Be («Faure Report», 1972) and Learning: The Treasure Within («Delors Report», 1996).
