Introduction

Our intention in this document is to broaden the framework. It's not simply a question of adding another set of skills - although some different ones are proposed. Rather, it's about reflecting on the nature of leadership required at a pivotal time in human history: an era of existential threat from climate crisis, the perils of pandemics, violent conflict, declining democracy and deepening divides, in the face of immense opportunity. It is possible to thrive and flourish in a world of artificial intelligence (AI), but the prerequisite is educational leadership of a new order. The aim of this document is to indicate the direction this leadership should take. We propose five “signposts” in this direction. Fundamental new perspectives on humanity's predicament emerge from a wide range of disciplines and viewpoints: we'll refer to ideas from the worlds of social philosophy, science, economics, business, the third sector and economic and social entrepreneurs. Taken together, they indicate that a revolution in values and action is urgently needed, which in turn depends on a transformation of education. The purpose of this document is to lead this transformation, with hope and humility.
