Valerie Hannon and Amelia Peterson engage in the debate on the future of education in a post-COVID world in their co-authored book, Thrive The Purpose of Schools in a Changing World. Building on the 2017 edition of Thrive by Valerie, the authors wrote this book because they are convinced that we won't achieve the necessary changes in education and in the nature of schooling if we don't ask some fundamental questions about the purpose of schools. They wanted to go beyond the usual questions about curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, and ask fundamental questions about the aims of mass public education in the new conditions. These new conditions are those of the new century, in which we face not only pandemics and disruptions of all kinds, but also profound challenges to the very nature of humanity.
They suggest that the new aim of schools should be to learn how to thrive in a changing world, because the world really is changing, and very quickly.
They highlight four totally interdependent levels for better self-fulfillment:
- in terms of our relationship with the planet and our environment
- in societal terms
- in our interpersonal relationships
- as individuals - on an intrapersonal level
