WeLearn

Artificial Intelligence powering education for sustainable development

Forms-2

Developed by the Learning Planet Institute and supported through the France 2030 TEDS (ANR-17-NCUN-0016), WeLearn is an AI-powered learning platform designed to advance education on the objectifs de
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education.

Cutting-edge technology, accessible to all

WeLearn builds on the latest advances in artificial intelligence:

  • Language models — programmes capable of understanding and generating natural language, much like a human conversation
  • Smart databases — enabling fast and relevant retrieval of information from millions of documents
  • Recommendation systems: similar to those used by streaming platforms, they suggest the content best suited to your needs.

These technologies are combined in innovative ways to create genuinely useful educational features, designed around the real needs of teachers and learners, while prioritising responsible and energy-efficient AI.

Easy access to sustainability resources

WeLearn provides access to a vast library of resources related to the SDGs. All materials are carefully selected based on three essential criteria:

1/ Accessibility: only free and open-access resources

2/ Reliability: scientific articles, popular content, reports from recognized institutions, validated teaching aids

3/ Relevance: documents directly linked to one or more of the 17 SDGs

To automatically identify relevant content, we developed a multilingual classification system that determines whether a text addresses one of the 17 SDGs.

Building on this database, WeLearn offers an intelligent search engine: simply type your question or request in natural language, and the system suggests documents that best match your needs. You can refine your search further by selecting specific SDGs of interest.

Reliable answers for learners

WeLearn includes a conversational assistant (chatbot) that answers your questions about sustainable development.

Unlike some AI tools that may generate inaccurate or fabricated information, WeLearn relies exclusively on its verified resource base.

Each AI-generated response is accompanied by its sources, allowing users to check the information and quickly explore reliable, relevant materials aligned with their field of interest.

Course creation for teachers

This innovative feature uses a multi-agent AI system — several specialised “intelligences” working together — to help you design your course.

Based on a few inputs about your course and your reference materials, WeLearn automatically enriches your initial content with relevant resources from its library.

These elements are then reviewed by three complementary AI agents:

1/ A “university professor” — ensuring academic rigour

2/ A “sustainable development expert” — ensuring thematic relevance

3/ An “instructional designer” — ensuring pedagogical coherence and effectiveness

The generated course outline includes:

  • A clear course description
  • Well-defined learning objectives
  • Expected student outcomes
  • The skills students will develop

WeLearn ensures that all elements are pedagogically sound and coherently structured — saving educators valuable preparation time.

At the end of 2024, the Learning Planet Institute and the UVED Foundation secured €8 million in funding over four years from France 2030 for their joint project Transition Écologique pour un Développement Soutenable (TEDS). Led by CY Cergy Paris Université and funded by the French National Research Agency (Agence Nationale de la Recherche, ANR), the project aims to train students and educators in ecological transition by combining the TEDS educational resource hub (led by the UVED Foundation) with WeLearn, the Learning Planet Institute’s AI platform.
