Jointly supported by CY Cergy Paris Université and the Learning Planet Institute, the’Learning Transitions Research Unit (UR LT) has been the research arm of the collaboration established a few months earlier between the two partners.

Housed within the Learning Planet Institute, UR LT aims to develop scientific theories, methods and tools, based on interdisciplinarity, participatory sciences, collective intelligence and Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a view to developing systemic approaches to the complex problems generated by planetary transitions. The UR LT will reinforce a very dynamic scientific offer on these transition issues within the CY Cergy Paris Université.

Research in four areas

Four main lines of research guide UR LT's work

Systemic analysis of transitions adopts an interdisciplinary approach to transitions to develop systemic analytical frameworks and facilitate selected transitions. We could, for example, study the transition of education as a whole, in terms of dynamics and interactions, in order to identify levers for action and transformation. Similarly, we could study social or technological transitions.

Engineering individual transitions is designed to support them in their transition to the status of “Planetizens” (citizens of the planet), capable of taking care of themselves, others and the planet. Themes of study include participatory science, learning trajectories and the transformation of emotions into action.

Engineering transitions in communities and organizations is to draw on the collective intelligence and participatory sciences of communities and organizations to identify the best methods for the evolution of different types of organization, in particular universities, schools and other types of organizations working for the general interest.

Engineering transitions induced and/or facilitated by Artificial Intelligence (AI)  is dedicated to developing theories, methods and tools for human-machine collaboration to address transitions. Topics of interest include governance (AI ethics, regulation, open and responsible research and innovation), AI-enhanced collective intelligence, and knowledge creation, transmission and evaluation in the AI era.

An extensive network of researchers

UR LT welcomes two types of researchers

  • From member researchers on site for a set period of time to collaborate in an interdisciplinary framework with other like-minded researchers working on transitions.
  • From associate researchers with a scientific interest in being connected to the Research Unit for concept prototyping, joint project development and community contact.

With access to a network of researchers and, more generally, to a national and international community sharing the same objectives in relation to the challenges of transitions (notably via  l’International Alliance created by’UNESCO and the Learning Planet Institute), researchers hosted by UR LT also benefit from the Institute's resources: sustainable campus, Fablab, amphitheatre, Learning Center, events scientific events organized by the Institute, as well as a pool of student “game changers” to whom researchers can offer courses or internships, among other benefits.
