The Builders of Possibilities approach

From kindergarten to high school, the Bâtisseurs de Possibles program uses a project-based pedagogy that guides the group through five stages: preparing the cooperative framework for the project, identifying a problem, imagining a solution, carrying it out, taking stock and sharing the experience. By placing them at the heart of the creative process, they become the authors and actors of new interdisciplinary and sustainable solutions to a common need.

Each year, a group of education and youth professionals is supported in implementing the approach.

Steps in the process

Stage 0

The aim of this stage is to prepare your group to embark on the process, by establishing a benevolent and cooperative climate. This is the most important step. Its duration may vary according to existing habits and rituals.

Step 1

Young people are first invited to observe the world around them to identify a problem that affects them, a situation they would like to improve. They deepen their knowledge of the problem they have collectively identified, so as to be able to imagine relevant solutions.

Step 2

Then it was time for collective creativity to come up with ideas for concrete actions, and to choose one to carry out together.

Step 3

Then it's time for a reality check. Practicality and collective ingenuity will be required to turn ideas into reality with a minimum of resources.

Step 4

Finally, the young people reflect on their experience, take stock of what they have learned and prepare a feedback event with parents, local residents and the Bâtisseurs de Possibles community.

This approach can be applied on a weekly basis throughout the school year, or on a one-off basis as part of an unmarked week or a creathon.

Adapting the approach

What impact does this have on participants?

Project-based pedagogy puts young people in an active position to work on a common project that unites the group.

For young people

They find meaning in what they learn in class, and learn to listen to their peers and work together. They enjoy being creative and independent, and gain in confidence. The benefits are quickly felt: on the classroom climate, the development of CPS and creativity!

For education and youth professionals

They guide the group through a structured learning framework, from stage 0 to stage 4. Thanks to the methodology and tools at their disposal, they create conditions of fairness that enable everyone to express themselves and engage with the issues identified. Throughout the process, they guide them in developing their critical thinking and creativity, both individually and as a group.

Testimonials

Les Bâtisseurs is different because it shows us that even if we are small, at our own level we can do many things (…) We don’t really see it as work. We really see it as a game (…) For example, when we have ideas and someone else has another idea, we add them together and that creates good ideas (…) I learned that you are never too young to do something great and that by doing a little, everything becomes possible

Primary school pupils
Bâtisseurs de Possibles

Students’ initiative is at the heart of the work that is launched and the projects that are proposed. […] This fits within the framework of school curricula, particularly in environmental and sustainable development education, and aligns fully with the core set of skills and knowledge

Karine Aillerie
Head of Foresight and Experimentation at the Centre for Pedagogical Support and Innovation

The approach requires the teacher to step back […] We go where the students want to go. We are there to help them and facilitate the process […] but we cannot predict the final outcome of the project

Noémie Martin
Teacher

On a daily basis, they truly listen to one another. Everyone is given the floor; no one is left aside. […] It’s good — it’s what we want — that they become citizens who think about one another

Noémie Martin
Teacher

This confirms the idea that children feel truly involved, that they have a great deal of imagination, and that we need to give them time for reflection and inner development

Martine Rouffet
Teacher

For me, the programme is about giving students the opportunity to become active participants and therefore to do things they would not necessarily have the chance to do during a normal class

Julie
Teacher

Bâtisseurs de Possibles is about giving meaning to learning, connecting this project with very formal and disciplinary skills, but within a completely different framework that can be playful and experienced by children as far more motivating

Marilyne Richmann
Teacher

It is a project that brings people together. Each student can find their place and use their own skills (creativity, writing, etc.). All these different skills help give meaning to the project and allow it to truly take shape and be carried out. It becomes the unifying link between all the learning that takes place in primary school: bringing everything together within a single project that creates real cohesion in the classroom and gives meaning to all learning

Virginie Ruppin
Teacher

It gives a new dimension to school and to classroom learning. It gives meaning to the work and the efforts that students put in; they see that their projects truly resonate in real life (…) If I had not been supported myself by the approach and the Bâtisseurs team, I don’t think I would have been able to change my teaching practices to this extent. We may want to become facilitators (…), but without Bâtisseurs de Possibles, I find it very complicated. I was very well supported by the team

A network run by and for the educational community

The "Bâtisseurs de Possibles" program was created by teachers for those wishing to set up projects that get students involved. Today, it federates a community of education and youth professionals represented by a network of delegates, supporting and accompanying the collective, and over 70 solutions put in place by young people.
