The Builders of Possibilities approach

From kindergarten to high school, the Bâtisseurs de Possibles program uses a project-based pedagogy that guides the group through five stages: preparing the cooperative framework for the project, identifying a problem, imagining a solution, carrying it out, taking stock and sharing the experience. By placing them at the heart of the creative process, they become the authors and actors of new interdisciplinary and sustainable solutions to a common need.

Each year, a group of education and youth professionals is supported in implementing the approach.

Steps in the process

Stage 0

The aim of this stage is to prepare your group to embark on the process, by establishing a benevolent and cooperative climate. This is the most important step. Its duration may vary according to existing habits and rituals.

Step 1

Young people are first invited to observe the world around them to identify a problem that affects them, a situation they would like to improve. They deepen their knowledge of the problem they have collectively identified, so as to be able to imagine relevant solutions.

Step 2

Then it was time for collective creativity to come up with ideas for concrete actions, and to choose one to carry out together.

Step 3

Then it's time for a reality check. Practicality and collective ingenuity will be required to turn ideas into reality with a minimum of resources.

Step 4

Finally, the young people reflect on their experience, take stock of what they have learned and prepare a feedback event with parents, local residents and the Bâtisseurs de Possibles community.

This approach can be applied on a weekly basis throughout the school year, or on a one-off basis as part of an unmarked week or a creathon.

Adapting the approach

What impact does this have on participants?

Project-based pedagogy puts young people in an active position to work on a common project that unites the group.

We also get feedback from students [...] on their ability to develop skills, to realize this and to be proud of themselves.

Lucas Gruez
College teacher

It's a unifying project. Each pupil can find his or her place, can use his or her own skills (creativity, writing, etc.) And all these different skills help to give meaning to the project and make it truly concrete and achievable. It's the federating link for all the learning we do in elementary school; federating within a single project that gives real cohesion to the class and gives meaning to all the learning.

Virginie Ruppin
Teacher of CE1

This confirms the idea that children feel invested, that they have a great deal of imagination, and that they need to be given time for interiority.

Martine Rouffet
Teacher in Castrie

Bâtisseurs de Possibles (Builders of Possibilities) is about giving meaning to learning, putting this project in parallel with very formal, very disciplinary skills, but in a completely different setting that can be fun and felt as much more motivating by the children.

Marilyne Richmann
Teacher in Metz

For me, the program is about giving them [the students] the opportunity to take an active role, and therefore to do things that they wouldn't necessarily be able to do in a normal classroom setting.

Julie
Teacher in Emerainville

On a daily basis, they really listen to each other. They give each other the floor, there's not one of them on the sidelines. [...] That's good, that's what we want, citizens who think of each other.

Noémie Martin
Teacher

The process forces the teacher to take a back seat [...] We go where they want to go. We're there to help them, to facilitate the process [...] but we can't predict the end result of the project [...].

Noémie Martin
Teacher

Pupils' initiative is at the heart of the work that is undertaken and the projects that are proposed [...] This falls within the framework of school programs in particular, in education for the environment and sustainable development, and is fully in line with the skills and knowledge base.

Karine Aillerie
In charge of monitoring and experimentation at the Centre d'Accompagnement et de Création Pédagogique

For young people

They find meaning in what they learn in class, and learn to listen to their peers and work together. They enjoy being creative and independent, and gain in confidence. The benefits are quickly felt: on the classroom climate, the development of CPS and creativity!

For education and youth professionals

They guide the group through a structured learning framework, from stage 0 to stage 4. Thanks to the methodology and tools at their disposal, they create conditions of fairness that enable everyone to express themselves and engage with the issues identified. Throughout the process, they guide them in developing their critical thinking and creativity, both individually and as a group.

A network run by and for the educational community

The "Bâtisseurs de Possibles" program was created by teachers for those wishing to set up projects that get students involved. Today, it federates a community of education and youth professionals represented by a network of delegates, supporting and accompanying the collective, and over 70 solutions put in place by young people.
